How should MHFAiders® be supported in the workplace?

Space for the Role

It is essential to ensure that Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders®) have adequate space and support to thrive in their role. While they take on the important responsibility of supporting their colleagues’ mental well-being, it’s crucial they are not overwhelmed by it.

Ensure they are able to balance their daily job duties with their additional MHFAider® responsibilities. This may involve adjusting their workload or providing extra resources, so they don’t feel stretched too thin. By securing this balance, you help MHFAiders® remain effective and confident in their ability to provide support while maintaining their regular work commitments.

Support Networks

MHFAiders® should be encouraged to regularly meet with one another, either in person or virtually, to share their experiences, give information, and support one another.

If an MHFAider® is the only trained individual within the organization, it is important to encourage them to stay connected with others who have received the same training.

Connecting with peers from their training course or participating in a broader Community of Practice can provide valuable insight and reassurance. These support networks are critical for maintaining their well-being and ensuring they don’t feel isolated in their role.

Tracking Conversations

It’s important to track conversations and the support provided by MHFAiders® to ensure the safety and well-being of employees as well as the MHFAider® themselves.

A documented log of interactions allows for monitoring the support being offered, any follow-up required, and any patterns or trends that may emerge. This information is valuable for identifying recurring issues and addressing them on a larger scale.

However, confidentiality and anonymity must be prioritized, ensuring that no individual is identifiable. Proper data handling protocols should be in place to protect everyone involved while still gathering useful information to improve workplace well-being.

Supporting Documents

MHFAEngland® has developed several resources and documents that can help guide the integration of the MHFAider® role into the workplace.

These documents outline the responsibilities of both the company and the MHFAider®, offering a clear framework for how to best support the role. They provide guidelines on setting boundaries, maintaining confidentiality, and balancing the MHFAider®’s work with their mental health support duties.

By using these documents as a reference, employers can create a structured and supportive environment for MHFAiders® to succeed and make a meaningful impact within the organisation.

It provides a safe space for MHFAiders® from across the Bailiwick to connect, exchange knowledge, and work together toward shared goals. Community members come together to discuss key topics, latest resources, best practice and share learning whilst offering peer support to each other.
