What is a Mental Health First Aider®?

Mental Health First Aiders® are trained to provide initial confidential support for individuals experiencing symptoms of poor mental health. These interactions can range from having an initial conversation to supporting and signposting individuals to get appropriate support.

Mental Health First Aiders are not trained to be therapists but can offer initial support through non-judgemental listening and guidance.

What are the skills and qualities of a MHFAider®?

A MHFAider® should be able to keep conversations confidential, unless there is a safety concern that requires action. They need to listen carefully without making judgments, showing empathy and kindness. It’s important for them to be approachable and have good communication and relationship-building skills. They should also handle tough conversations with care and sensitivity, while being aware of their own emotional responses.

Why become a MHFAider®?

Becoming a MHFAider® has many benefits. It helps create a healthier workplace by reducing stigma around mental health, encouraging open conversations, and offering initial support to those who need it. In this role, you’ll be able to use your existing skills to help others while also developing new listening and communication skills that can be useful in many areas of life. Plus, it gives you the chance to support your colleagues by providing a safe and confidential space for them to talk.

What does a Mental Health First Aid England® course teach?

The course teaches participants how to spot signs of mental health issues and build the skills and confidence to help someone while keeping themselves safe. It also shows how to encourage individuals to get the support they need for recovery or managing symptoms. The course focuses on promoting well-being and reducing stigma around mental health. Additionally, participants get three years of access to MHFAider® support, including the MHFAider Support App® and membership in the Association of Mental Health First Aiders.

Thoroughly enjoyed this course in all ways. A great balance of interaction and listening. I also appreciated the reminder that we are there to help guide to the professionals and we are not expected to solve their problems.
